There used to be four common life phases: childhood, adolescence, adulthood and old age. Now, there are at least six: childhood, adolescence, odyssey, adulthood, active retirement and old age. Of the new ones, the least understood is odyssey, the decade of wandering that frequently occurs between adolescence and adulthood. During this decade, somethings go to school and take breaks from school. They live with friends and they live at home. They fall in and out of love.
According to the study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the wily hero who devised the Trojan Horse hefted his mighty bow on April 16, BC, and executed the unruly crowd who had taken over his home and was trying to force his wife into marriage. The finding leaves many perennial questions unanswered, such as whether the events portrayed actually occurred or whether the blind poet Homer was the author of the tale.
But it casts a new sheen of veracity on a story that has existed in a hazy realm of fantasy and history since it was first composed years after the Trojan War. Odysseus spent seven of those years as a captive of the nymph Calypso, then was delayed another three by Poseidon, who was angered by the blinding of his son Cyclops. When he finally arrived at Ithaca, he was angered to find men urging his wife Penelope to accept that her husband was dead and marry one of them.

The cultural background to the poem indicates a Bronze Age setting around to years before the Homeric literary period itself. Odysseus is an archetype of the person of intellect who uses brains and eloquence rather than brawn to outwit opponents and impress peers, and therefore sets the scene for later Greek Classical culture. The true authorship and dating of the Odyssey and the other great poem attributed to Homer, the Iliad, has been much disputed.
The consistency of language and treatment lends itself to the view that a single author Homer created, or at least consolidated and edited, the literary material.

Radiometric dating finds Earth is 2. This amazing fact seemed like alchemy to many, but American chemist Bertram Borden Boltwood was intrigued. Boltwood studied this concept of “radioactive series,” and found that lead was always present in uranium and thorium ores. He believed that lead must be the final product of the radioactive decay of uranium and thorium.
A few years later, in , he reasoned that since he knew the rate at which uranium breaks down its half-life , he could use the proportion of lead in the uranium ores as a kind of meter or clock. The clock would tell him how long that ore — and by extension, the earth’s crust — had existed. His observations and calculations put Earth’s age at 2.
This was a dramatic increase in the estimate of Earth’s age for the time. Boltwood’s basic idea and technique have been used ever since , but advances in technology and knowledge of atomic structure have shown the earth to be even older. Uranium decay is so slow it can indicate geologic time. Boltwood’s reasoning holds true for other radioactive elements such as carbon , which has been used to date artifacts within human history.
